Defining both terms

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) targets AI systems that synthesize information into generated answers — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) encompasses the broader optimization for all AI answer engines, including search-based AI like Google AI Overviews.

The overlap

Both practices share core techniques: entity optimization, structured data, content engineering and authority building. The distinction is in scope — AEO is the umbrella discipline, GEO is a specific application within it.

When to use which term

Use "AEO" when discussing the overall strategy for AI visibility. Use "GEO" when specifically discussing optimization for generative AI platforms. In practice, the work required is the same.
